Until 1921, no new silver dollars had been coined in the United States since 1904 the Morgan dollar. The silver dollar demand was low and no need for any additional coinage. The combination of a law called the Pittman Act and the desire for a coin to commemorate World Peace Day after the end of World War I in 1918 laid the groundwork for the 1921 Peace silver dollars to be released.

Pittman Act called Morgan existing 350,000,000 dollars to be melted for the gold and Congress to buy the equivalent amount of silver from the mines in the U.S. at a fixed cost of 1 ounce. This money would be used to coin a number similar new silver dollars, and the resulting difference of 23 cents on the dollar is considered a subsidy to silver producers in the country.

The dollar Morgan was minted at all 3 mints in 1921 at a rate of about 86 million coins. At the same time, the Peace dollar is being developed further by Anthony DeFrancisci, noted designer of medals. Its design was decidedly different from previous designs in a couple of notable ways. First, its representation of Liberty face left instead of right as it did in the dollar Morgan & Barber coins of the time, and wears a crown of rays on the head. The Eagle is in sleep with folded wings on the back, rather than in flight as the wings or as in previous coin designs. The Eagle is in a heap with the word PEACE on it, with rays extending from the mound. The most obvious difference was the relief of the coin. Once the design of Peace was ready, the coinage Morgan currency was suspended and $ 1,006,473 for Peace in 1921 he coined the Philadelphia Mint.
