Baitcast Reel

Will somebody help me with my problems with my baitcast reel?
My baitcast reel makes this insufferable loud hissing sound when i try to cast it with any power, but it is missing its tension knob thing on the reel handle's side. Do those 2 problems have a connection? Also it doesn't cast anywhere near as far as i have seen a baitcaster cast, is that also because the knob is gone?
The cast control knob is pretty important. It allows for adjusting the tension put on the spool when in freespool. It's part of what controls the spool speed and lateral movement of the spool when casting.
The loud whirring noise you hear when casting is the bearings. Since they are carrying the load of the spool, if the spool shaft (which rides on the bearings) is not controlled - by the cast control knob - then there can be too much movement side to side, causing the bearings to get noisy. In contrast, they can also be making noise because they need to be cleaned and/or oiled.
Yes, the cast control knob missing can cause casting distance to suffer - but so can dirty or un-lubed bearings.
