Bushy, Split Ends In Horses Tail?
Hi i have a 15hh2 appaloosa x that has a really bushy tail at the top
...it kinda just sticks out and looks really messy, then today when i was brushing him i saw that the bushy part had brownish ends and looked like split ends (he has a grey tail)
Put it this way...if i try to plait it the plait has to be super tight to stop the top of his tail from sticking out
And i havent done anything to his tail since we got him 6 months ago except obv brush it
I use mane and tail on it at least 3 times a week but nothing seems to budge this like fuzzball at the top of his tail
Any ideas on how to get rid of it???
Hes just recently being wormed so its not worms...
And i dont think hes being rubbing it because its not a rubbed tail...the hairs like grow sticking out at the top...and they just keep growing!
a bushy top of the tail is usually a sign that he's rubbing his butt up against something when you aren't looking-- my TB mare used to do it, too. it's like cribbing or weaving: it's a stable vice. When a horse presses his rump up against something like a board on a fence or the bars in his stall, it breaks the hairs at the top of their docks. there's not terribly much you can do about it, but for me it helped to condition the tail when i hosed her off, then brush out the top a little bit and make a loose braid that runs about halfway down, which i left in for about two days at a time, then brushed, conditioned, and rebraided. Show horses have the top sides of their docks shaved to avoid that problem and make plaits look nice, anyway.
