How do you fish a topwater plug for bass?
Well, i've fished my whole life on the ocean, and recently moved to a place with a pond out back. I was pretty clueless trying to fish freshwater, because I've never done it before. I've had SOME luck, and have caught about 7 or 8 bass in the past couple of days. I've come to realize they bite best late in the day, and I've had most of my luck with a small topwater lure. I'd cast it out and reel it in slowly and jig it often. Am I fishing it correctly? Are there any tricks or hints to fishing this type of lure more effectively? Can you offer any more advice to a novice bass fisherman? I have a lot of fishing knowledge, just not much freshwater experience and am looking for as many tips as I can get! Thanks in advance,

Great question, Cody.
I'm not sure what type of lure you are using, but I love using my Rapala Skitter Pop for topwater bass fishing.
There are a couple of methods you can master. One is called "walking the dog" and this is when you pop it the lure goes back and forth (as if it is looking left-then immediately right-then immediatly left again). It takes time to get that one down.
But for basic topwater tips here is what I have found works.
First of all, get a topwater with a feather of some sort on the back hook that hangs in the water. Then I like to fish along a weedline or a border of water lillies where the largemouths like to hang out under. By casting laterally from a boat you can pop it along the edge of the weeds rather than casting into the weeds and then reeling it back to you in your boat(perpendicular from the edge).
Also, take your time. Top water fishing is so fun because you actually get to witness the attack. So I like to take it in real slow, popping it here and then making it spit there, and then in the middle wait... wait... pop!....wait... wait.... wait... spit!...wait... (you get the idea)
I have found early dawn is a great time to top water, but I fish northern Ontario, so the bass may respond to light, dark, and warm water differently if you are further south and have less shade.
But try the Rapala Skitter Pops. I love the clown color for early, and sorta dark, mornings, and then I switch over to a metallic blue or frog color in the day time.
Also, if you are in a pond fish populations are probably fairly low, water depth is probably fairly shallow, water might be murkier, and the temperature may be warmer. So really try a bunch of techniques to see if you have better success with it!
